Why did we invest our money with the Community Foundation?

After much research and careful deliberation, the Board voted to use some of our savings to partner with the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and open a scholarship fund. For a small fee, we’ll have access to a large, diversified investment portfolio to help us grow the funds we use to award scholarships each year. The Community Foundation will also help facilitate the scholarship process and distribution, relieving some of the burden on the current volunteers. And since the Community Foundation is a public charity, any member’s contribution to the scholarship fund will now be tax-deductible.

This is just the beginning of a partnership we believe will greatly benefit our members, and our ultimate goal is to grow our permanent endowment in the name of the Trumbull Retired Teachers Association. With that established, scholarships will be available for local students forever, and as members of TRTA, that perpetual support will be our collective legacy.

Why do we have multiple foundation funds?

Our goal in working with the Community Foundation is to build an endowment in the name of TRTA members; therefore, the endowed TRTA Scholarship Fund is our primary focus.

However, while we build the endowment over time, we need a second expendable fund from which to administer current scholarships. That second fund will only hold money needed for scholarship awards until our endowment is large enough to begin distributing. We have added Teacher Grant fund as well.  Now members can click a link to make a tax deductible donation to the Teacher Grant program.

How much did TRTA invest and what is the end goal?

We began with an initial total investment of $5,000, with part set aside to pay out upcoming scholarships and the other part to seed the permanent endowment. With your help, we hope to grow the endowed TRTA Scholarship Fund to over $100,000 and be able to provide scholarships to local students in perpetuity!

Are contributions to the TRTA through the Community Foundation Fund tax-deductible?

Since the Community Foundation is a public charity, any money you donate directly to the fund is tax-deductible. To be eligible for a tax-deduction, donations must be made directly to the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley with TRTA in the memo line. Donors will receive a receipt from the foundation for tax purposes.
